Your battery may occasionally go dead, and you will have to jump-start it. However, if you did this more than three times this year, then you may need to get a new battery. Jump-starting your car can take a toll on your battery and shorten its lifespan. A damaged battery will also need to be jump-started a lot more often. If you keep jump-starting your car, then you may damage your alternator.

Your battery will also need to be replaced if it is past its prime. Your car battery won't last more than five years. If your battery is older than that and still functioning, then you may still need to get it replaced. Your battery may work well, but you should get it replaced in order to ensure that your car continues to function optimally.
